Genus Acraea

This page is currently being updated.

A largely pantropical genus, with 239 Afrotropical species described and 109 species recorded in Uganda (Bernaud et al., 2019). At Semuliki a total of 51species have been recorded. Two extra species (A. endoscota and T. ventura) have been confirmed at Semuliki (Bernaud pers. comm) since the Forbes (2018) checklist this contributing to just under 50% of the Ugandan species total. The Albertine Rift zone of endemism, that includes Semuliki, contains the richest diversity of Acraea taxa at 127, with 30 of these taxa being endemic.

There has been disagreement in the classification of this group. Most recently, and with in-depth detail of historical and current taxonomic research of the Acraea by the author and his colleague  J. Pierre, Bernaud, (2023) has consistently proposed a classification describing a monophyletic genus (Acraea), with two subgenera: Actinote (127 taxa, including subspecies) and Acraea (182 taxa, including subspecies). Using the Hennigian approach to quantitative phylogenetic analysis and gene sequencing, the Afrotropical, Neotropical and Asian Acraea appear to be just one monophyletic clade, with the exception of the epaea group. Trees of divergence show the Acraea subgenus as consumers of Passifloraceae (a family of shrubs, vines and trees) and the subgenus Actinote, consumers of plants other than PassifloraceaeThe Bernaud and Pierre classification will be followed to represent the species recorded at Semuliki.

Although the museum specimens (first four images) have been identified as A. leucographa, this species cannot readily be separated from A. endoscuta using external traits only. Genitalia dissection is required for confirmation. Margin shape and the presence of the white section near the tornus can point towards a species or sex but these characteristics cannot be considered reliable for definite identification.

Tribe Vagrantini

Within the Afrotropical region this tribe is represented by three genera: Phalanta, Lachnoptera and Smerina. Only two of these genera have species present within Semuliki, the genus Smerina contains only one species endemic to Madagascar.

Genus Lachnoptera

A small genus of two species: Lachnoptera anticlea and L. ayresii. Only L. anticlea has been recorded from Semuliki.

Genus Phalanta

Another small genus of six species, two being recorded from Semuliki: Phalanta phalantha and P. eurytus.
